Hose it off

A tool for this particular job has exactly one acceptable cleaning standard: you should never have to touch the business end. Ours meets it with geometry and materials — high tray walls keep cargo off your hands during the lap, and the rinse is a garden hose, not a scrubbing session.

The routine takes thirty seconds: tip the tray into the bin, blast rake and tray with the hose, shake, hang. The metal-and-aluminum build is rust-proof by construction, so wet storage on an outdoor hook isn't neglect — it's the design spec. No drying ritual, no garage smell, no plastic slowly going brittle in the sun.

Twice a season, give it the full minute: check the push-pins are seated, sight down the handle for straightness, and hit any stubborn residue with soapy water. That's the entire maintenance schedule. There is no oiling, no parts drawer, no consumables to reorder.

Retirement math is the last honesty: a flimsy scooper is disposable by design; this one is a tool. Treat it like the rake and shovel it hangs beside — rinse it, hang it, and expect it to outlast the puppy phase, the adult years and several bags of replacement tennis balls.
